The Express Features Fantom in their Weekend Edition

The Washington Post's free newspaper, The Express (which, incidentally, has a higher circulation than the Post) printed a Q&A session with Fantom Comics owner Matt Klokel on Thursday, February 23. Check it out:

Fantom Featured in American University's The Eagle

Abutting Fantom Comics is the fine academic institution of American University. AU's newspaper, The Eagle, sent mild-mannered reporter Josh Kramer to the store to get the dirt on us, and the result was an article about Fantom Comics, with a sidebar devoted to our Grand Opening.

Why is George Lucas peddling an elitist, anti-democratic agenda under the guise of escapist fun?

picard vs vader.jpg

Is George Lucas using his Star Wars movies to further a pro-despotic agenda? How is the redemption of Darth Vader akin to letting Hitler off the hook? Can justified human emotions turn a good person evil?

The fascinating salon.com article "Star Wars" Despots vs. "Star Trek" Populists addresses these and other questions. Worth reading!

Simpsons Trivia Contest results

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Simpsons Trivia Contest on the 11th and 12th. Despite the snow storm raging outside all day, we had over 40 contestants participate in 8 semi-final matches. Following are pictures from participants in each match:

In our first semi-final match of the day, eventual 1st Prize winner Jesse Stanchak (right) created an upset when he beat top-ranked seed Eamonn Rockwell (foreground) in the tie-breaker round.

In another upset, Jay Williams (far right) came from behind to beat odds-on favorite Matt Gever (2nd from left) by answering an "expert level" question. What was it that got Jay into the finals? He knew the answer to the following question: "In the episode Lisa's Rival, what was the name of the romance novel Marge was reading when she was interrupted by Lisa playing her sax?" If you think you know the answer, let's hear it in the comments section.

This match was dominated by the ladies. Erica Chong (2nd from left) and Katrina Moncure (2nd from right) were matching each other question for question until Katrina finally pulled ahead to win it.

10-year old Simpsons phenom Helen Warren (foreground) created quite a stir. After tying the guy on the very left during regular play (I feel like a jerk...I forgot his name. If you're reading this, please submit your name in comments so I can credit you properly), the two went head to head in the tie-breaker round. They tied once more, each naming exactly 21 Simpsons characters in 30 seconds (a la Win Ben Stein's Money). We decided they both earned a spot in the finals.

Here's a couple of shots of me calling out the questions. Note the game board in front of me. Correct answers resulted in one's gamepiece moving forward. First to cross the finish line won.

Today's Finals

Don't let a little snow scare you. We had an unbelievably good turnout yesterday for The Simpsons Trivia Contest. And today, just a few minutes after noon, the 9 finalists will compete for a huge grand prize (and the also a pretty good 2nd prize).

Yesterday, the spectators seemed to have even more fun than the contestants. Today, when you'll see only the best of the best go head-to-head, it'll be even more exciting.

See you at noon!

We'll reply to you by email to confirm your entrance.

How the trivia contest works:
We'll run the quarter-finals every half-hour on Saturday, from 10:30am till 8:30pm. Depending on how many entrants we get, you'll be pitted against anywhere from 1 to ?? people in a trivia fight to the death.

The quarter-final winners from Saturday will return at (high) noon on Sunday to fight it out in the semi -finals. The 2 victors of that bloodbath will then face off head-to-head for the right to be crowned the Greatest Simpsons Expert in the metro DC region (this will look great on your resume), and walk away with over $500 worth of Fantom Comics merchandise.

And even if you're not the competitive sort, stop by to check out the contest. There's nothing quite like seeing Simpsons buffs try to one-up each other.

Featured Book: American Virgin (Vertigo)

YOU ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR FIRST TIMEâ?¦

Adam Chamberlain is a 20-year-old youth minister, a best-selling author, and most important, the head of a rabid national virginity movement. But practicing virgin or not...Adam is about to lose it.

Just a few weeks shy of marrying the girl of his dreams â?? the only woman God has said he can ever know sexually â?? Adam's fate, future and sex life are cast in direct opposition with God's Word.

Like Y: THE LAST MAN, American Virgin follows one man's dark quest into unknown territories â?? geographically and emotionally. A shocking terrorist act casts Adam adrift in exotic locales not so easily managed by a slick image, a clever comeback or the Good Book. Adam is forced to confront head-on the very rifts we all feel between our carnal desires and whatever higher power we answer to.

Will Adam's first time be his last?

Issue 1 is available March 8. To reserve your copy, email fantomcomics@gmail.com with your name and contact information. Make the subject line: American Virgin.
