I realize it's over and done, but if for some reason Heath Ledger backs out of the new Batman movie (or the producers smarten up), my vote for who should play the joker goes to Star Trek The Next Generation's very own Lieutenant Data: Brent Spiner. Anyone who remembers him as the scientist in Independence Day knows he can pull off "crazy." Thanks to Alex Karelis, who first thought of casting him as the Joker.
