This Weekend: $1 tax-free comics for charity!

Some of you may have known Fantom Comics customer Richard Bligen. One of the nicest people you've ever met, Richard passed away a few months ago from a brain tumor. He was 38.

This coming Saturday and Sunday, Fantom Comics will be offering thousands of Richard's comics for $1 a piece and donating 100% of the profits to Capital Hospice - which took care of him towards the end - in his name.

All the books are tax free and a tax write-off. Also, Fantom Comics will reward every $10 or greater purchase with a free gift!

The comics will be available all day this Saturday and Sunday (June 16th and 17th) during business hours (10-9 on Sat; noon-6 on Sun).

Cash or checks are preferred, as we're trying to keep the transactions entirely seperate from the Fantom Comics till, but if you buy enough, we can accept a credit card purchase (I'm thinking a $25 minimum).

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Good Time Movies

2 ½ out of 4 Fantoms

The second installment of the Fantastic Four film series was susprising, well, enjoyable. It feels very weird to say that after seeing so many comic book movies that have been just plain stupid, overdone and depressingly un-fun (i.e. Ghost Rider, Hulk, X-Men: TLS, Spider-Man 3, etc.)

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (which is loosely based on the "Galactus Trilogy") opens with two big stories happening in their FF movie universe: The first being Reed Richards and Sue Storms wedding, which is turning into a media fiasco and is being called the “Wedding of the Century”. Meanwhile, weather-changing anomalies are occurring all around the earth, as are giant 200-meter craters. This of course, is being caused by the Silver Surfer who is also releasing dangerous radioactive energy everywhere he goes. When no one is able to track down or stop the Surfer, the FF and the Army recruit some help: Victor Von Doom (mwahahahaha!!!!) Eventually, the FF learn that the Surfer is actually just a poor, innocent herald trying to save his home planet from being eaten by his master.

The one thing thats better in this sequel is that it’s interesting without trying to hard, and you are actually able to like the characters. As I said before, there is the wedding that is supposed to place between Reed and Sue, before it gets inturrupted by the Surfer. The writers manage to make a nice (or at least bearable) story line about there relationship without being cheesy. There is also a good background story involving Johnny and how he wants have some one to be with (enter Frankie Raye, but sorry – no Nova.) Ben doesn’t do too much, except for being the muscle and… well, that’s kind of it. Of course there is the evil Dr. Doom and the Silver Surfer. Dr. Doom is in the film just long enough to betray everyone, and almost have ultimate power. But the Silver Surfer, he might just be the thing that separates this film from the first. His cool, moral, nice, and tends to do the right thing… except when he’s helping an Omnipotent-like being destroy countless planets.

When you think about what makes this movie unique, first off, its just plain fun. Fun, fun, fun. Secondly, its script doesn’t suck (so that’s always helpful) and the tone of the film feels very natural and relaxed, and most of it isn't trying to be forced. Even the ending is relaxed, and thankfully, the movie doesn’t end 4 times (cough, cough, X-Men 3 and Spier-Man 3.) To be honest, I bet that the only reason I see this movie as good is because I had no expectations (especially after seeing the first movie) and because it looks pretty good when you compare it too everything else that has been so bad (comic book and non-comic movies alike); but that’s what makes this movie worth seeing, because even though its not Fantastic (ha, a pun), its not like any other movie in a while – insted, it lets you have a good time.

Spider-man takes Broadway by storm

Hello Internet!

I'm Abby, nice to meet you! For those of you who don't know me (which is probably a lot of you) worked at Fantom last summer. Now I have the pleasure of keeping up with the store, while I'm in England for the year studying acting, to post on the site!

While rooting around on the internet I found perfect topic for my first post: SPIDER-MAN THE MUSICAL!

In case you don't know I am a musical theatre fanatic, so I have a lot to say on the subject, but I will try to keep the technical talk to minimum.

First of all let's just appreciate the incredibly weird and wacky world we live in where someone decides "Hey, let's make a Spider-man musical!" and a whole bunch of Broadway producers say "GREAT IDEA!"

Great, now that we are done appreciating, lets take a look at the facts.

It has previously been announced that a full scale, 2 act musical of Spider-Man was in the planning stages of production, with U2 signed on to produce the score, Julie Taymor (the first woman to win a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for The Lion King in 1998) signed on to direct.

When I first read this at Playbill.com (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/87231.html) my first thoughts of course, as a comic book and musical theatre fan, were "OH NO!"

Having further thought about it, I decided unless put into the hands of someone incredibly daring and clever and willing to make a purposfully funny piece out of the show, this project is pretty much a doomed. I questioned whether they would even go as far to continue pre-production, or just drop it as another unused idea. I was hoping that what would happen.

Alas, I have recently read, again on Playbill.com (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/107378.html) that a prepared reading of the musical is set for this July. Casting has yet to be determined, but the article provided the following details about the show:

" Among the roles being sought to fill are the young-man-turned-hero Peter Parker/Spider-Man ("male, late teens to early 20's...[with a] great pop/rock voice") and love-interest Mary Jane ("female, late teens to early 20's...[with a] great pop/rock voice") as well as villain Norman Osborn/Green Goblin and Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson (both call for "male, 50s.")

The character breakdowns provide some insight to plot points as the character Arachne ("female, 20-35 years old, any ethnicity") is described as "a beautiful, boastful young woman turned into a spider for her hubris and lack of respect for the gods. She subsequently appears to Peter Parker and the audience as in turn a powerful spider-woman who comes from another time to inspire Peter; an otherworldly lover; a bride; a terrifying (and sexy) dark goddess of vengeance; a dance partner in a charged and violent spiders dance of death; and, finally, a lonely, fragile young woman." Casting is seeking a "strong Celtic, Balkan style, e.g., Sinead O'Connor," noting, "outside the box ideas are welcomed. Could be someone from the music industry."

Also, a "Geek Chorus" consisting of "three teenage boys and one girl" are described to "meet to ritualistically retell the greatest Spider-Man stories." "

I only wish i could attend the rehearsed reading in July (or even audition!) but I foresee it being an embarrassing waste of time for all involved, audience, cast and production members included. Much like the failing fast musical version of The Lord of the Rings , now gracing the West End stage. Which, by the way, has already set the record for biggest money losing musical in the history of musical theatre.

All that being said, I could be wrong. This show could be poignant and deep and entertaining, or maybe a funny satirical farce, or maybe it WILL be shit but end up being successful anyway, like endless Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals (Cats, Starlight Express) and the plotless ABBA musical Mamma Mia!

And, who knows this may only be the first production birthed from this new and unholy union that is musical theatre and comic books. Next up we could be seeing X-Men: The Musical, opening song being "It Sucks to Be A Mutant"

Who knows, these days anything could happen.

Until next post,

Abby

New Avengers #31 Contest: BEWARE: SPOILER!!

Much like the unlocking of Al Capone's vault, the staff at Fantom Comics opened New Avenger's #31 with lots of excited anticipation.

And much like Geraldo and his millions of viewers that day in 1986, we were disappointed to find...absolutely nothing.

I'm not going to spoil the last few panels for you. Let me just say that if this ending was bigger than Captain America getting killed, as Marvel claimed, then the world's gone insane.

If you really want to spend your money on a comic book with an exciting, unexpected ending, then I recommend Archie & Friends #110. I left that issue feeling a lot more satisfied than I did with New Avengers 31. Ah, Reggie. When will you learn?!

Marvel has certainly lost a lot of credibility with this bogus hype.

PS: Of course, nobody wins the contest, because nobody guessed anywhere close to the correct ending. But take heart, contestants. That just shows you're brighter than the entire editorial staff at Marvel.
